This year I have done a great deal of research regarding instances of tragedy via ignorance (think Big Tobacco not disclosing the hazards of smoking to the public for years after it knew the risks). This is an area of social justice I’m super passionate about, and it’s what my docuseries is based on.
This week there was a big win on the side of the good guys, and I thought I’d share it here in case you guys haven’t heard the news. A man named Dewayne Johnson sued Monsanto for 289 million dollars… and he WON. Exposure to one of Monsanto’s toxic herbicides gave Johnson, a school grounds keeper, terminal cancer.
This is a HUGE DEAL, of David and Goliath proportions, because it is the first case – out of literally hundreds – in which a cancer patient sued Monsanto and won. The company’s products have previously been linked to several deaths and many cases of illness, so it’s a major breakthrough for one of the victims to have succeeded in legal proceedings.
While the company refused to cop to the damages, the SF jury ruled in Johnson’s favor: “The jury found Monsanto acted with malice and oppression because they knew what they were doing was wrong and doing it with reckless disregard for human life,” said one of Johnson’s attorneys. BOOM.
Gosh I love redemption and happy (hmmm, maybe “happy-er” is more apt here) endings. Fuck yes to the underdog and the good guys winning! The media is saying that this case is just the beginning for these evil-doers and will open the door for more justice to be served. Hell to the yes.
